Clinical quality and safety awards

ELA, applying the policy of Clinical Government, has as priority to promote and support initiatives aimed at ensuring a safe and quality environment in clinical care, as well as systematically work on reducing the risks associated with care.

In order to promote the development and advancement of clinical safety in ELA, as well as to acknowledge the achievements, ELA Medical Executive Direction, awards the best initiatives in patient safety by categories:

  • A global award for the best clinical safety initiative.
  • An Award for each Business Unit for the best work based on the lines of action defined by the Clinical Safety Committee in Clinical Governance & Quality.
  • In addition, prizes are awarded for active participation in the process of building clinical safety in the company.

Global Award

For the best clinical safety initiative in ELA Market Unit:

Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital for the work «Critical patient box drill». The work has been conducted by Laura Azmar Más y Manuel Ruiz Polaina.
  • Business Unit Award

    For the best work based on the lines of action defined by the Clinical Safety Sub-Committee in Clinical Governance & Quality:

    • «Chronic Patient Tracking Programme Internal Medicine», carried out at CIMA Hospital with Health Promotion Service (Sanitas Hospitals proprietary centres) by César Morcillo, Adela Chimeno, Lorena Rodríguez y Laura Martínez and System Management Department.
    • «Anti-neoplastic treatment with azacitadine at home: clinical results and patient opinions», carried out at Torrejón Hospital (Sanitas Hospitals - PPPs) by Amaya Palomo, Nazaret Mena, Jenifer Medina, Alejandro Domínguez, Esther Zamudio, Alejandra Blázquez, Rocío Ceballos, Manuel Mirón, Ana Sebrango Sadia y Catalina Saez Bertrand of the Domiciliary Hospitalization Unit, Hospital Pharmacy Service and Hematology Service.
    • «Impact of improvement measures as a result of the implementation of a system of KPIs for clinical quality and safety of dentistry patients. Initial results and next steps», carried out at Sanitas Dental by Berta Uzquiza, María Gómez Vega and Patricia Zubeldia.
    • «Digitization of care process controls in elderly residences», carried out at Sanitas Mayores by Verónica García-Miranda y Esther Cabrera of the Medical Innovation Management and System Management and the Management of Centers and Operations.
    • «Evidence of Effectiveness of interventions in Fall Prevention in the Surgical Medical Service in the Bupa Antofagasta Clinic», carried out at Bupa Chile by Ximena Báez and Claudia Oliva of the medical-surgical hospitalization service / Quality Unit.
    • «Rescue Academy activities as an element of improving the safety of patients and employees of the LUX MED Group and disseminating first aid knowledge», carried out at LuxMed by Mariusz Pacałowski, Maciej Pająk, Katarzyna Michaliszyn, Renata Witak, Katarzyna Możdżonek, Natalia Humięcka.

    For active participation in the process of construction of clinical safety in the company were awarded to:

    • Julio Valdés, Sub-Director of Clínica Reñaca – Bupa Chile.

    Bupa Chile for the work «Improving the satisfaction of our patients and the quality of the service: a company commitment in Clinical Service». The work has been conducted by Viviana Jecham and the team from Clinical Service.

  • Business Unit Award

    For the best project based on the lines of action defined by the Clinical Safety Sub-Committee for in Clinical Governance & Quality:

    • «Perfecting the technical quality of examinations and the integrity of reports in the Integramédica Imaging Departments», carried out at IntegraMédica - Bupa Chile by Daniela Iovane Benuzilio, Roxana Flores Farías and Claudia Falcón González.
    • «Joint Commission Accreditation: Madrid Campus. Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Moraleja and Sanitas La Zarzuela», carried out by Juan Carlos Fuertes, Laura Alvargonzález, Juan Ángel Moreno and Luz Pagonessa of Sanitas Hospitales.
    • «Safe administration of medication» , carried out at the Hospital Universitario de Torrejón by Maria Rocío Ceballos and Llanos González of the Nursing departments.
    • «BU Dental clinical quality and safety project», carried out by Patricia Zubeldia, María Gómez Vega, Berta Uzquiza and Alma Fernández Arias.
  • Collaboration prizes

    For active participation in the process of construction of clinical safety in the company were awarded to:

    • Donna Ritchie, Assistance Officer of the North area of the General Directorate of Insurance.
    • Esther Fernández Cámara, Nursing Hospital Virgen Del Mar.
  • Global Award

    For the best initiative in clinical safety in SLA Market Unit, Hospital Sanitas CIMA for the work «Avoid risks. The importance of communication between the radiology technician and the patient».

    The work was performed by Dolores Mendoza Romero, Jessica Quirós Blanco and Olga Soriano Berenguer, from the Hospital's Radiology and Nursing Department.

  • Business Unit Award

    For the best project based on the lines of action defined by the Clinical Safety Sub-Committee for in Clinical Governance & Quality:

    • «Effectiveness of clinical simulation for training in patient safety», carried out at Hospital de Torrejón, by the team formed by María Cruz Martín Delgado, Carlos Muñoz de Cabo, Laura Riesco, Elena González, Victoria Transmonte, Juan Manuel López, Patricia Rebollo, Pilar Reboto, Enrique Esteban and Gema Marmisa. The participants in the project were the Safety Committee, and the Intensive Care, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Information Systems departments.
    • «Management of Safe Processes through the Implementation of an IT System in the Network of Integramédica Centres», by Álvaro Donoso and Giovanna Gutiérrez, from the IT Department and Quality Department of Bupa Chile.
  • Collaboration prizes

    For active participation in the process of construction of clinical safety in the company were awarded to:

    • Antonio López del Castillofrom the Anaesthesia Team of Hospital Sanitas La Moraleja, for his effort and involvement, together with Roberto Ruiz Abascal, for integrating the hospital into the network of safe hospitals in Anaesthesia and Reanimation.
    • Eva Romero García. Hospital de Maníses. Head of the Anaesthesia and Reanimation Service, Pain and Surgical Coordination Unit, for her fundamental role in leading the bloodless surgery initiative implemented out at Hospital de Maníses ("Maturity Assessment in Patient blood Management": MAPBM).
    • María Rosa Valls Alea. Sanitas Residential. Director of the Mirasierra Centre, for her interest in improving patient safety and her involvement in the analysis of incidents.
  • Global Award

    For the best initiative in clinical safety in the SLA Market Unit went to the Hospital Universitario de Torrejón, for its work in Hospital Universitario de Torrejón for its work in «Implementing security rounds as a strategy to improve the safety of each patient».

    Lead by the head of the Intensive Care Department, Dra. María Cruz Martín Delgado, and with the participation of the Patient Safety Committee, the professionals from the departments that completed the rounds (Intensive Care Unit, Surgical Block, A&E, Radiology, Hemodynamics, Paediatrics, Neonatal Care, Hospitalisation, Pharmacy, Anatomical Pathology, Out-Patient Consultations and Specialist Centre) and the management team.

  • Business Unit Award

    For the best work based on action plans defined by the Sub-Committee of Clinical Safety in Clinical Governance & Quality:

    • «Stratification of nosocomial risk», in Hospital Sanitas La Zarzuela,

      Coordinated by Dr. José Feyjoo Casero, head of the Internal Medicine Department, and also included the participation of nursing departments pertaining to hospitalisation.

    • «The strategy to consolidate the surgical check-list», as one of the key elements of the patient safety policy of the Hospital Universitario de Torrejón.

      Led by Dr. Enrique Esteban Agustí, together with the General Surgery Department and Nieves García Durán, ex-supervisor of the surgical block. The entire Safety Committee participated as well as all professionals in the Anaesthesia, Surgery, and Nursing departments of the Surgical Block.

    • «Continuous quality process of Sanitas Dental».

      In which Dr. Blanca Longás Bravo participated.

  • Collaboration Awards

    For collaboration were awarded for active participation in the construction of Clinical Safety to:

    • Patricia Lacruz, head of quality and processes, Hospital de Maníses.
    • Dra. Mª Cruz Martín, head of the Intensive Medicine department, Hospital de Torrejón.
  • Award for integration in Clinical Governance

    To Hospital Sanitas CIMA.

  • Award for the involvement of working groups in the risk analysis of healthcare processes

    • To the Hospital Manises in recognition of the effort made in the analysis and improvement of the process "Prevention, detection and treatment of Staphylococcus aureus-Methicillin-resistant infection".
    • To the Hospital Sanitas La Moraleja in recognition of the effort made in the analysis and improvement of the process "Prevention, detection and treatment of Staphylococcus aureus-methicillin-resistant infection".
  • Award for the improvement of safety in the operating room

    • To Hospital Sanitas La Zarzuela in recognition of the effort made in complying with the "Surgical Safety Checklist".
